PTSD doesn’t always look the way you expect
Jun 26, 2026
Most of us have heard of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the context of war, but it can develop after accidents, violence, natural disasters, medical emergencies or repeated exposure to distressing situations.
June 27 is PTSD Awareness Day. CMHA Muskoka-Parry Sound is marking it by raising awareness, reducing stigma and reminding people that help is close by.
PTSD is not a sign of weakness. It is a mental health condition that can affect anyone, regardless of age, background or profession.
It can show up differently for everyone, but common experiences include:
• Flashbacks, intrusive memories or nightmares
• Feeling on edge or easily startled
• Trouble sleeping or concentrating
• Avoiding people, places or things connected to a trauma
• Feelings of fear, guilt, anger or shame
• Changes in mood, relationships or daily life
Certain life circumstances and professions bring greater exposure to trauma. This can include first responders, health-care workers, military members and veterans, Indigenous Peoples, refugees and newcomers, and survivors of violence or abuse. Experience shows that supportive workplaces and communities play an important role in helping people feel safe enough to reach out for support.
If you or someone you know is struggling with the effects of PTSD, please reach out. CMHA Muskoka-Parry Sound offers mental health and addiction support services across the region. Contact your nearest office or call our 24/7 Crisis Line at 1-800-461-5424.
